Why The Affordable Care Act Matters for Musicians

Musicians have historically lacked health care in great numbers, and that’s why Kevin Erickson’s Pitchfork Op-Ed on Obamacare is a must-read.

Erickson cites an online survey conducted by Future of Music Coalition and the Artists’ Health Insurance Resource Center pre-Obamacare, which found that 53% of musician respondents lacked health coverage.

Contrary to an unfortunate popular belief, this has nothing to do with musicians being irresponsible or unable to plan for the future. The number of uninsured musicians is largely due to the fact that musicians are self-employed, and are therefore responsible for getting their own health coverage — something that wasn’t always easy or affordable, until now.
